School of Mechanical and Power Engineering (SMPE) was founded on July 1946 and is one of the earliest colleges founded at of Henan Polytechnic University (HPU). SMPE now has 6 teaching departments including departments of Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation, Energy and Power Engineering, Measurement and Control Technology and Instruments, Vehicle Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, and Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering. Among them, four majors, including Mechanical Design and Manufacturing and Automation, Energy and Power Engineering, Measurement and Control Technology and Instruments, and Vehicle Engineering, are state-level first-class undergraduate major construction point majors; Additionally, these same four majors have passed the professional certification of China engineering education; Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation is a state-level characteristic major, and Energy and Power Engineering, Measurement and Control Technology and Instruments are two characteristic majors of Henan Province. SMPE owns "Advanced Manufacturing and Intelligent Equipment" Henan Province A class characteristics of backbone academic clusters and three first-level key disciplines of Henan Province (Mechanical Engineering, Instrument Science and Technology, Power Engineering and Engineering Thermo-physics). Among them, Mechanical Engineering is a first-class doctoral and master's degree authorized discipline, and has a postdoctoral research station. Power Engineering and Engineering Thermo-physics, Instrument Science and Technology are first-level master's degree authorized disciplines. SMPE also owns three professional master's degree authorization points: Mechanical, Power Engineering, and Electronic Information (Instrumentation Engineering field). In addition, there are currently 10 provincial (ministerial) level scientific research platforms and 23 provincial (ministerial) level teaching and scientific research teams.

There are nearly 170 faculty members in SMPE, including 133 teachers with doctoral degrees, 95 teachers with senior titles, 1 foreign double-employed academician, and 1 German "Humboldt Scholar"; Additionally, SMPE has more than 30 outstanding talents at the national and provincial levels, including national outstanding teachers, experts enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, members of the Higher Education Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, experts of the Ministry of Education's professional accreditation of engineering education, as well as provincial outstanding experts, leading talents in scientific and technological innovation of the Central Plains, and provincial outstanding teachers, etc. SMPE has built a "model branch" for national party building work.

At present, over 3300 undergraduate students, 450 full-time masters and doctorates studying in SMPE. Students have outstanding achievements in science and technology innovation, and have won more than 500 national, provincial and ministerial awards. The employment rate of graduates remains above 95%.

In the past five years, SMPE has undertaken more than 150 national, provincial and ministerial level teaching and research projects, won nearly 20 national, provincial and ministerial level science and technology awards, 16 education and teaching achievement awards, published more than 1,000 papers, of which more than 600 were indexed by SCI and EI, published more than 20 monographs, and authorized more than 200 invention patents.
